The Illinois roofing exam (qualifying party test)

Illinois does not exam “roofers” — it exams the qualifying party, the named person whose knowledge licenses the company under the Roofing Industry Licensing Act (225 ILCS 335). If you are starting an Illinois roofing company, this exam is your timeline.

Two exams, two classes

The Limited exam qualifies a business for residential work up to 8 units; the Unlimited exam covers everything, including commercial and industrial. Pass mark is 70% for both, administered through Continental Testing Services for IDFPR. Pick the class by the work you will actually sign: a Limited licensee signing a 12-unit building is unlicensed for that contract.

The money

State side: $373 in state/testing fees ($125 application + $248 exam), before bond premium and insurance total state cost in our dataset, plus the exam fee and the bond — $10,000 (Limited) or $25,000 (Unlimited) surety, and liability minimums of $500,000 per occurrence / $250,000 property damage. Prep side: classes in the Illinois market run to $1,995 (residential) and $2,495 (unlimited) at the best-known academy. The class may be worth it; it is not the fee.
