Registration + endorsement. Alaska does not license roofers by exam; it registers them. A roofer working for hire must hold a Specialty Contractor registration from the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (AS 08.18), with a $10,000 bond and set liability insurance minimums. Building or substantially altering a home also requires a Residential Contractor Endorsement, which does require a course and an exam.
| Item | Alaska |
|---|---|
| Regime | State contractor registration — Specialty Contractor (roofing); Residential Contractor Endorsement for larger residential work |
| Exam | None. Exception: the Residential Contractor Endorsement requires a 16-hour cold-climate course and passing the residential contractor endorsement exam. That endorsement is about building/altering homes, not the roofing registration itself. |
| Experience | No state experience requirement published |
| Application fee | $100 not-returned application fee (12 AAC 02.180) |
| License / registration fee | $250 certificate of registration fee for the initial biennial period |
| Total state cost | $350 for the initial two-year Specialty Contractor registration, plus a separate Alaska business license ($50 per year). Residential Endorsement adds $250 if required. — Fees are set in 12 AAC 02.180 for general, mechanical and all specialty construction contractors. |
| Bond | Surety bond under AS 08.18.071: $10,000 for a mechanical or specialty contractor; $25,000 general contractor; $20,000 general contractor with residential endorsement doing exclusively residential work; $5,000 handyman (single project $10,000 or less). A cash deposit may be filed instead. |
| Insurance minimums | State-set minimums for registration: public liability/property damage insurance of not less than $50,000 for injury or death to one person, $100,000 for injury or death to more than one person, and $20,000 for property damage, plus workers' compensation coverage where required. |
| Who qualifies | No qualifying-party exam regime for specialty registration. For residential work over the 25% threshold, an individual holding a Residential Contractor Endorsement must hold the registration or be assigned to the registrant. |
| Timeline | No official processing timeline published by CBPL in this pass; registration, bond and insurance must be in place before bidding or performing work, so allow several weeks for CBPL processing. |
| Renewal | Biennial, expiring September 30 of even-numbered years; renewal registration fee $250 (12 AAC 02.180), with bond and insurance kept continuous. |
| Credential | Scope | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Specialty Contractor Registration — roofing trade | both | Specialty contractors may use not more than three trades. No exam for the base specialty registration. |
| General Contractor Registration (with or without Residential Endorsement) | both | Needed for new home construction and residential work greater than 25% of the value of the structure being altered; the endorsement holder must be assigned to the registrant. |
| Handyman Contractor Registration | residential | Limited to one project with an aggregate price of $10,000 or less including labor, materials and all other items. |
A subcontractor performing specialty (roofing) work for hire must be registered in its own name as a Specialty Contractor; registration is not borrowed from the prime contractor.
State registration governs; AS 08.18.061 bars a political subdivision from requiring an additional bond for a similar occupation from a state-registered contractor. Local business licensing and building permits (e.g. Municipality of Anchorage) still apply.
No specific deductible-waiver statute found. no state statute specifically banning deductible waivers found in this pass; general insurance-fraud and unfair-practices law still applies
