Roofing license in Nevada

State license. Nevada fully licenses roofers through the State Contractors Board. Roofing work needs a Classification C-15 license (which covers all its subclasses) or the C-15a Roofing subclass alone, with four years of qualifying experience, a Contractor Management Survey (business and law) exam plus a trade exam, a board-set bond, a monetary limit, and participation in the Residential Recovery Fund for home work.

ItemNevada
RegimeState Contractors Board license — Classification C-15 (Roofing and Siding), subclass C-15a Roofing
ExamContractor Management Survey (CMS — business and law) exam plus the C-15 or C-15a trade exam, administered by PSI — pass mark 75%. CMS: 60 questions, 2 hours, open book, at least 45 correct (75%). C-15a trade: 50 questions, at least 38 correct; C-15 trade: 60 questions, at least 45 correct (secondary exam sources). All exams must be passed within six months of the application receipt date (Board FAQ). PSI charges about $95 per exam or $140 if the two are scheduled together (secondary).
ExperienceFour full years of qualifying experience within the past 10 years as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee or contractor. Training from an accredited college/university or accepted equivalent programme may satisfy up to three years, with written documentation such as transcripts or apprenticeship certificates (Board FAQ).
Application fee$300 not-returned application processing fee (Board FAQ — same for every classification)
License / registration fee$600 license fee for a two-year license, due after approval. Nevada does not issue one-year licenses.
Total state cost$900 in Board fees ($300 + $600), plus the Residential Recovery Fund assessment for residential work — $200 (monetary limit up to $1,000,000), $500 (over $1,000,000 but limited), $1,000 (unlimited) — plus PSI exam fees and bond premium — The license fee and the Residential Recovery Fund fee are due at issuance and again at each two-year renewal. No payment plans or partial payments (Board FAQ).
BondA license bond in the amount set by the Board at approval, ranging from $1,000 to $500,000 based on license type, the monetary limit sought, and the applicant's financial responsibility, experience and character. Do not submit the bond with the application — the amount is given in the approval letter.
Insurance minimumsProof of compliance with industrial insurance (workers' compensation) is required at issuance, or an exemption affidavit if not required to carry it. If the license is qualified by an employee, workers' compensation is required. No state general liability minimum was published in the Board sources checked — 'Not published'. A CPA-prepared (or, for small limits, self-prepared) financial statement supporting the requested monetary limit is also required.
Who qualifiesA Qualified Individual (qualifier) must be designated: the management qualifier takes the CMS exam and the trade qualifier takes the trade exam — one person may fill both roles. The qualifier must be a bona fide employee or officer of the business.
TimelineNot published as a guaranteed Board timeline in the sources checked. Secondary sources estimate roughly 90-180 days including experience documentation, financial statement, background/fingerprinting and exams — estimate only.
RenewalEvery two years (biennial). Renewal fee is $600 plus the Residential Recovery Fund assessment by monetary limit, with an active bond and workers' compensation compliance.

Classes and credentials

CredentialScopeNotes
C-15 Roofing and SidingbothPrimary classification. A C-15 holder may perform any work authorised for its subclasses: C-15a Roofing, C-15b Siding, C-15c Insulation, C-15d Waterproofing.
C-15a RoofingbothSubclass limited to roofing: laying watertight and weatherproof material on roofs — asphalt, pitch, tar, felt, shakes, shingles, aluminium, tile, slate, urethane and photovoltaic roof tiles — including roof installation, repair, replacement and estimates. Not authorised to install conduits, inverters, batteries or electrical connections for photovoltaic work (secondary classification descriptions).
C-15b Siding / C-15c Insulation / C-15d WaterproofingbothCompanion subclasses under C-15 for siding installation/alteration/repair, building insulation, and waterproofing applications respectively. Each is a separate subclass if taken without the full C-15.

Subcontractors

Subcontractors and specialty contractors must be licensed in their own classification before submitting bids — a prime's license does not cover an unlicensed roofing sub in Nevada.

The local layer

A Nevada Business ID / state business registration through the Secretary of State (SilverFlume) is needed before applying, and cities/counties (for example Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno) require local business licenses and issue the building permits on top of the state contractor license.

Deductible law (insurance work)

No specific deductible-waiver statute found. No Nevada statute specifically barring a contractor from advertising, offering or paying a homeowner's insurance deductible was located in primary searching on 2026-10-22. General deceptive-trade and insurance-fraud law (NRS ch. 598 / ch. 686A) may still apply — do not read this as permission.
